Moving Well Through Menopause

Recovery, Rest & Supporting Your Body Through Menopause

Welcome to Module 8

Important Notice

The information in this module is provided for general educational purposes from a physiotherapy perspective. It is not intended to replace individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

Fatigue, sleep changes and fluctuating energy levels are common during menopause. If you are experiencing severe fatigue, ongoing sleep difficulties or symptoms that significantly affect your daily life, you may wish to seek guidance from your GP or another healthcare professional.

The aim of this module is to help you understand how rest, recovery and listening to your body can support your physical health during menopause.

In this module we explore

• why recovery becomes increasingly important during midlife
• how sleep and stress can influence musculoskeletal health
• the balance between activity and rest
• why consistency is often more helpful than pushing too hard
• how to support your body in a sustainable way.

Why Recovery Matters

Recovery is an important part of maintaining physical health.

Exercise places a small amount of stress on the body, which is how muscles, bones and tissues become stronger. However, the body also needs time to recover and adapt.

Sleep, nutrition, hydration and rest all play important roles in this process.

Without adequate recovery, the body may feel more fatigued, and muscles and joints may feel more sensitive or stiff.

Finding the Balance

Many people fall into a pattern of doing too much on good days and very little on tired days.

This is sometimes called a boom-and-bust cycle.

Instead of pushing hard when energy is high and then needing long periods of rest, it can be helpful to aim for steady and consistent activity levels.

Even small amounts of regular movement can support strength, joint health and overall wellbeing.

Supporting Your Body Through Menopause

• why recovery is important during midlife
• how sleep and stress influence physical health
• how to balance exercise and rest
• how to create a sustainable approach to movement.

Women Often Say…

Many women notice that their energy levels change during menopause. Some common things women say include:

"I used to be able to push through, but now I feel exhausted."

"Some days I feel fine, and other days I feel completely drained."

"I know exercise is good for me, but sometimes I just feel too tired."

"I feel like my body needs more rest than it used to."

These experiences are very common during midlife and can be influenced by hormonal changes, sleep quality, stress levels and the demands of everyday life.

What the Research Says

Research suggests that sleep quality, stress levels and recovery can all influence musculoskeletal health and pain levels.

Poor sleep has been linked with increased sensitivity to pain and slower tissue recovery. Hormonal changes during menopause can also influence sleep patterns for many women.

Regular physical activity, stress management and good sleep habits can help support overall health and wellbeing during this stage of life.

Physio Insight

As a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, one of the most helpful things I often discuss with women during midlife is the importance of balancing movement, strength and recovery.

The body is incredibly adaptable, but it responds best to gradual and consistent loading combined with appropriate rest.

Supporting your body through menopause is not about pushing harder. Often it is about learning to work with your body rather than against it.

REFLECTION

Before finishing this module, you may wish to pause for a moment and reflect on what you have learned throughout this course.

You might like to consider:

• What is one thing you understand differently about your body now?
• What types of movement make your body feel good?
• Are there small changes you could make to support your strength, mobility or recovery?
• How can you be kinder to your body as it moves through this stage of life?

Menopause can bring changes, but it can also be a time to reconnect with your body and find new ways of supporting your health and wellbeing.

Remember that progress does not need to be dramatic. Small, consistent habits over time can make a meaningful difference to how your body feels and functions.

Moving Forward

Menopause is a natural stage of life, and every woman’s experience is different.

Supporting your body during this time is not about perfection. It is about building habits that help you feel stronger, more comfortable and more confident in your body over time.

Small, consistent steps can make a meaningful difference to your long-term health and wellbeing.

If You Would Like More Support

If you would like more personalised guidance, I also offer physiotherapy services locally in Heaton Mersey (SK4).

My Menopause MOT is a one-to-one physiotherapy assessment designed to look at how your body is functioning during midlife. During the session we can assess areas such as:

• posture
• muscle strength
• joint movement
• pelvic health
• movement patterns

Together we can discuss your symptoms, your goals and the types of movement or exercise that may best support your body.

I also teach Pilates classes, which many women find helpful for improving strength, mobility and confidence in movement during midlife.
